Josie helps individuals, couples, youth and professionals through genuine connection and practical, compassionate care.
The name Maverick comes from the Oxford English Dictionary definition:
“An independent-minded person who does not go along with the group or rules.”
That word perfectly captures how I work — outside the box, but always with purpose and care.
At Maverick Counselling, I believe that every person’s journey is unique, and their therapy should reflect that individuality. With over 20 years of professional experience, I bring a flexible, creative, and evidence-based approach to counselling that’s tailored to each client’s needs.
Rather than following one fixed model, I integrate techniques from multiple theoretical frameworks to design sessions that truly fit you. This is known as a pluralistic approach — drawing from diverse, proven methods to support your specific goals, preferences, and way of understanding the world.
Through two decades of practice, I’ve learned that people thrive when therapy is adaptable, respectful, and deeply human. My work blends insights from a range of psychological traditions, including:
CBT helps identify and transform unhelpful thinking patterns that influence emotions and behaviour. It’s a structured, practical approach that supports clarity, resilience, and self-awareness.
This model explores meaning, freedom, and authenticity — helping you understand what truly matters in your life, make empowered choices, and live with greater purpose and self-acceptance.
Behavioural methods promote positive change through small, achievable steps that reinforce new habits and emotional stability. They’re useful for anxiety, motivation, and practical life adjustments.
SFT focuses on your strengths and what’s already working, helping you build confidence and momentum toward your goals. It’s forward-looking, brief, and empowering.
Gestalt invites you to explore emotions, sensations, and relationships in the here and now. It emphasises awareness, embodiment, and integration — connecting mind, body, and experience.
Narrative therapy helps you reframe the stories you tell about yourself. By seeing your life through a new lens, you can separate from problems and rediscover your strengths and values.
Not all healing happens through words.
At Maverick Counselling, I often weave in expressive, creative, and somatic techniques to deepen emotional awareness and healing.
This may include:
Drawing, writing, or journaling to express feelings that are hard to verbalise
Mindfulness and guided visualisation to bring calm, focus, and grounding
Somatic awareness work to reconnect with the body’s wisdom and release held emotion
These experiential approaches help clients move beyond cognitive understanding into whole-person growth — mentally, emotionally, and physically.
To be a Maverick is to think differently — to question convention, and to care deeply about doing what actually works for the individual in front of you.
That’s what drives my practice.
Every client receives:
A personalised, collaborative experience
Therapy that draws from multiple disciplines
A respectful space that values your pace, insight, and lived experience
Compassion, honesty, and genuine human connection
Being a Maverick means daring to help people differently —
with authenticity, evidence, and heart.
